Exemplary lawn mowing is based on expert mowing techniques at the right time. After winter or sowing, choosing a date is often a headache. Another cause for dissatisfaction is when the loud petrol mower rattles at an irregular hour. This guide explains in detail when you can mow your lawn with peace of mind.
When is the right time to mow the lawn?
After winter, the lawn should be mowed when temperatures are above 10 degrees, the green area is dry and the blade height is 8-10 cm. Freshly sown lawns are mown at different blade heights depending on the type. In the morning, lawn mowing is permitted from 9 a.m. (petrol mowers) or 7 a.m. (electric mowers).
Mowing the lawn after winter – when does it make sense?
When winter releases the garden into spring, the lawn looks more like a stubble meadow than a velvety green carpet. Anyone who rushes to use a lawnmower will make the poor condition of the green space worse. You can use the following signals to tell when you can mow the lawn for the first time after the winter break:
- The temperatures no longer fall below 10 degrees day and night
- The green area is as dry as possible so that the wheels of the mower do not sink in
- The stalk height is 8 to 10 centimeters
- The first early bloomers signal the beginning of the vegetation phase
Choose a day with overcast weather and mild temperatures. The intense rays of the spring sun should not hit the freshly cut stalks.
Freshly sown lawn – when does it start mowing?
To determine when you should mow a lawn after sowing, the blade height is the decisive factor. The young noble grasses only grow properly once they reach a certain minimum height and are not immediately torn out of the ground by the mower. However, if the maximum height is exceeded, the vegetation point shifts upwards, which prevents closed scar formation. The specific type of lawn defines the optimal lawn height for the first cut after sowing:
- Play, sports and utility turf: 7.0 to 7.5 cm
- Decorative lawn: 8.0 to 8.5 cm
- Shadow lawn: 10.0 to 10.5 cm
If in doubt, simply measure the grass height with the ruler. Even for lawn experts, it is tricky to correctly assess the current growth height with the naked eye.
Mowing the lawn in the morning – at what time is it allowed?
Long-lasting summer heat puts the gardener in a dilemma if he wants to mow his lawn professionally. Mowing in direct sunlight and high temperatures is taboo because the noble grasses are damaged. This means that early morning comes into focus as the best date, before the sun gains strength. Now the legislature has a say, because the Federal Immission Control Ordinance provides clear guidelines for the time from which lawn mowing is permitted in the morning:
- Petrol mowers: Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m.
- Electric mower with environmental label (€69.00 at Amazon): Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m.
- Hand mower: anytime
Please note that municipalities are free to set special regulations. Therefore, please ask the responsible public order office as a precaution to avoid conflicts with the neighbors.
Tip
Mowing the lawn at the right time is just part of professional care in spring. After the third or fourth cut, stimulate growth with a fresh treatment. Scarifying ventilates the green area thoroughly because thatch, moss and weeds are combed out.
