Is the African ring basket poisonous?

The African ring basket is probably non-poisonous, but there is no reliable information about it. Until the non-toxicity is confirmed, consumption of the leaves and flowers is not recommended. The plant is known as a decorative ground cover and prefers sunny locations.

When it rains, however, the sensitive flowers remain completely closed because the African ring basket does not tolerate too much moisture well. It prefers sun and sandy soil. Since there is practically no information about possible toxicity, it can be assumed that this plant is not poisonous. However, it is not advisable to consume the leaves and flowers until they have been proven to be non-toxic.

The most important things in brief:

  • probably non-toxic, but not proven
  • consumption is not recommended for safety reasons
  • decorative ground cover
  • Growth height approx. 5 to 10 cm
  • Flowers two-tone
  • loves the sun and sandy soil

Tip

The pink and white flowering African ring basket can be combined very well with the white flowering mountain sandwort (bot. Arenaria montana).
