Goji berries became really popular in this country a few years ago thanks to the trend of so-called “superfoods”. The vigorously growing bushes not only bear delicious and he althy fruit, but also delight garden owners with their delicate flowers.
When is the flowering time of the goji berry?
The main flowering time of the goji berry is between July and August, although depending on the location and weather, flowering can occur as early as June or into September. The violet-colored, bell-shaped flowers with long stamens and styles then bear the vitamin-rich berries.
Attractive flowers and vitamin-rich fruit enjoyment
The goji berry, also known in Europe as the common buckthorn or Chinese wolfberry, forms numerous stalked flowers on its arch-shaped, overhanging long shoots in the main flowering period from July to August. Depending on the location and weather, these can bloom as early as June or into September. These flowers are:
- colored purple
- equipped with a bell-shaped calyx
- are surmounted by long stamens and the style on the corolla
In a sufficiently sunny location, fertilized flowers develop orange to bright red berries that can be eaten fresh or dried.
Pay attention to proper care during the flowering period
To make growing easier, goji berries should be planted in spring in soil that is as well-drained as possible. The plant prefers a sunny location with enough space to spread. Even when it's hot and a little dry, you shouldn't water constantly. However, it is helpful if a little water is given near the ground every few days in the morning or evening if it is persistently dry.
Tip
If cared for well, a buckthorn plant grown from a cutting will usually produce serious quantities of fruit in its third year. If the plant does not bloom, it may be due to incorrect pruning measures. The buckthorn always produces flowers and therefore also fruits on shoots that are two or more years old.
