When is the best time of year to plant trees?
The optimal planting time for trees is spring and autumn, depending on the root type and tree species. Bare-rooted trees are planted from October to April, trees with root balls in early autumn, and containers can be planted all year round. Deciduous trees prefer autumn, evergreen trees are more flexible.
How to find the right season
Basically, spring and autumn are the best seasons to plant a tree. The only requirement is that the ground is frost-free.

Trees with three different root types are commercially available, all of which have an influence on planting time.
- Bare root trees: have no soil at the roots
- Trees with root balls: have been dug up, there is soil stuck to the roots and the ball is often wrapped with linen or wire mesh
- Trees in containers: Plants grew in pots from the start
Containerware can basically be planted all year round, as these trees take root easily and continue to grow. Trees with a root ball, on the other hand, should ideally be planted in early autumn (around the end of August and the end of September) so that they grow in time before winter. Bare-rooted produce, on the other hand, goes into the ground between October and April.
Tree type
In addition to the root, the type of tree also determines when it is best to plant it. Deciduous trees are always planted when the leaves fall in autumn so that they can invest their energy in the development of new roots. In spring, however, such a tree requires too much energy to grow new leaves. However, you can plant evergreen trees all year round - depending on the root type.
