If the planter is large enough, the goji berries can be grown in the pot without any problems. However, some special features regarding location selection and care should be taken into account for this type of plant.

Can you grow the goji berry in a container?

The goji berry can be easily grown in a container by providing a large planter, well-drained substrate, sufficient sunlight and regular care such as watering and pruning. The potted plant should be protected in winter.

Advantages of pot culture for buckthorn

The goji berry, also known as “Common Bocksdorn”, was initially known as an “import berry” from Asian countries, but is now increasingly being cultivated in Germany. Under the right environmental conditions, Goji Bereen can grow rapidly. Many hobby gardeners therefore prefer growing in pots, as the plants remain somewhat more compact and their underground rhizomes cannot spread uncontrollably across the garden. It is also much easier to ensure a permeable substrate in a container than in an outdoor bed with loamy soil. Last but not least, the sun-hungry goji berries can simply be placed in a bucket in the location that is best oriented towards the sun.

Laying the foundation for a good harvest by planting

Even if freshly propagated Goji Bereen seem quite small and innocent at first, with good care they can after a short time stretch out long shoots up to 80 cm long or more in all directions. Accordingly, the planter for a fenugreek bush should be large enough. The optimal time for planting and transplanting is spring, as there is still enough time for rooting before the winter frosts. As a potting substrate, you can mix two parts of ordinary potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon) with one part of perlite or sand. The pot should have drainage holes and should not be placed on a trivet. At least, due to the goji berry's intolerance to waterlogging, you should make sure to only water it every few days, even in summer, and not to leave its roots in constant moisture.

Take optimal care of the goji berries in the pot at any time of the year

In a sunny location, the goji berry in the pot usually develops splendidly if the following care tips are followed:

  • Overwinter potted plants with bubble wrap and a layer of mulch outdoors
  • don't water too often (the buckthorn bush doesn't like waterlogging)
  • a courageous pruning should be carried out annually
  • Mildew infestation should be detected and combated as early as possible

Tip

With Goji berries, even a single bush can easily produce flowers and fruits. However, the number of berries to be harvested is usually higher if several specimens of these berry bushes are placed in close proximity to one another.
