A bare house wall is not always a pretty sight. A bed can help quickly. However, there are a few things to consider so that the plants grow well there and the wall stays nice and clean.
Is a bed directly on the house wall recommended?
A bed directly on the wall of the house can be both visually appealing and ensure better plant growth. To keep the wall clean, a small gap or cover with gravel or bark mulch should be provided. Choose plants that match the lighting conditions of each side of the house.
Is a distance between the house wall and the bed useful?
A distance between the flower bed and the wall of the house always makes sense if the growth of the plants is impaired by the house or if the wall would be dirty by the plants. This happens relatively often on the weather side, for example, over long periods of time. Due to persistent or very heavy rain, the earth splashes up and leaves unsightly traces.
In most cases, gravel can provide a quick fix. Even a narrow strip ensures a sufficiently large distance. Alternatively, you can cover the bed with bark mulch or gravel. Ground cover plants also keep the soil in the bed in check.
The bed on the south wall
You should only put plants that require a lot of light on the south wall of your house. But the moisture content of the soil is also important. If it is dry, you can water thirsty plants, but you will hardly be able to get soil that is too wet dry. Mediterranean herbs are also suitable for the south wall because most of them tolerate full sun quite well.
The bed on the north wall
The north wall is especially home to plants that love shade. Astilbe or hostas should feel quite comfortable here. However, the house wall is rarely aligned in such a way that it casts its shadow on the bed all day long. Areas that receive at least a few hours of sunshine can be planted with plants that are suitable for partial shade.

If you want to avoid unsightly splashes of earth on your house wall when it rains, then ensure there is a small gap between the bed and the wall or cover the bed.
