Removing a thuja hedge requires a lot of effort and sometimes high costs. The question therefore arises as to whether Thuja hedges can also be poisoned. There are a few options, but ultimately the only method left is to dig up the thuja hedge and dispose of it.
Can you poison a thuja hedge?
It is possible to damage a thuja hedge using various methods such as road s alt, s alt water, vinegar, heavy lime, weed killers or waterlogging. However, these methods are not recommended as they negatively affect soil he alth, insects and other garden inhabitants and make the garden unusable for a long time.
Poisoning a thuja hedge – is that possible?
Of course there are ways you can use to tackle a thuja hedge. Round-Up is often recommended, a weed remedy that is no longer approved for household use. Other means often mentioned are:
- Sprinkle road s alt
- pour with s alt water
- Water thuja with vinegar
- Lime the floor heavily
- Use weed killer
- Let the hedge collapse due to waterlogging
Some of these applications can severely poison a Thuja hedge, causing it to ultimately die. However, this is not advisable in the interests of soil he alth and the he alth of garden owners. Last but not least, such use harms the insects and other animal garden inhabitants that ensure a he althy garden climate.
When using chemical agents, you must assume that the garden will not be usable for months. You are not allowed to grow fruit and vegetables there for a long time.
Dig up thuja hedge
The safest and most harmless, but unfortunately also the most labor-intensive, way to remove an arborvitae hedge is to saw it down, dig it up and dispose of it.
First cut the hedge down so that only a tree stump remains in the ground. It must be long enough that you can attach a winch rope to it to get the rhizome out of the ground.
Alternatively, dig up the roots if the thuja is not yet that big. Since the tree of life has shallow roots, you don't have to dig that deep to get the roots out of the ground.
Cut the tree of life easily
If you saw off a tree of life directly above the ground, it will not sprout again. The roots rot in the ground over time.
Pour a sufficiently high layer of topsoil over it, then you can at least sow lawn here again. Before planting other plants, you must wait until the roots have decomposed.
Tip
The root system of a thuja does not extend far into the ground, but rather spreads beneath the surface. In Thuja hedges, the roots are so intertwined that it can be difficult to dig up the tree of life.
