There are numerous varieties of the medlar Photinia fraseri. The range of cultivations ranges from small shrubs to trees three meters high. Each variety has its own characteristics.
What varieties of loquat are there?
There are many loquat varieties, such as the compact Photinia 'Devil's Dream', 'Dicker Toni', 'Little Red Robin' and 'Robusta Compacta'. Tall growing varieties include 'Red Robin', 'Red Angel' and 'Camilvy'. Special varieties are Photinia 'Pink Marble' and 'Curly Fantasy'.
Compact varieties
Photinia 'Devil's Dream'(R) impresses with its fiery red leaf shoots. It grows compactly because it forms short shoots and numerous branches. As a result, this medlar develops a dense hedge in a short time. The medlar 'Dicker Toni' reaches heights of between 150 and 200 centimeters. The short and strong shoots are typical of this variety. The foliage of this new variety is leathery and is insensitive to wind-exposed locations.
The short brother of the popular 'Red Robin' is called 'Little Red Robin'. It grows between 100 and 150 centimeters high and resembles its namesake. The loquat 'Robusta Compacta' is characterized by good winter hardiness. It grows between 120 and 180 centimeters high and, under optimal conditions, reaches heights of up to two meters.
Tall-growing shrubs
The loosely upright growing shrub 'Red Robin' is one of the most widely planted loquat varieties. Its easy-care and undemanding properties make it suitable for creating hedges. With an increase of between 20 and 30 centimeters per year, the tree grows comparatively quickly. It grows between 150 and 300 centimeters high.
The loquat 'Red Angel' is similar to the variety 'Red Robin'. Their trademark are the slightly slit leaves, the edges of which appear wavy. This variety is not hardy and should be cultivated in a container. The variety 'Camilvy' reaches similar heights to that of 'Red Robin'. Its leaf coloring is more intense than the coloring of the popular variety. 'Camilvy' grows at a rate of 50 centimeters per year. Their growth is loose and broadly bushy.
Special features
The Photinia 'Pink Marble'(R) sprouts in spring with bright pink to rose-colored leaves that have an elegant appearance. As the summer progresses, the fresh leaves take on a green hue. In autumn they turn their striking pink color a second time. The leaves of Photinia 'Curly Fantasy' have a wavy edge that is irregularly toothed. The variety reaches heights of up to 300 centimeters.
