A ridge is not a permanent area. Experience has shown that anyone who enjoys spending time in their green oasis loves to change their image again and again. For a major change it is sometimes necessary to transplant a hedge. Find out how to do it here.
How can you move or transplant a hedge?
To successfully transplant a hedge, ideally choose a fall month and follow these steps: 1. Prepare new location 2. Pruning 3. Dig up 4. Shorten roots 5. Transport 6. Planting. Then stabilize, water and, if necessary, apply frost protection.
The right time
Ideally, you should choose an autumn month before the first frost for the procedure. Then the growth of the plants is slowed down, so that the new requirements do not have a significant impact on development. In addition, the bushes have time to form new roots in winter.
Necessary steps
Moving a hedge takes place in the following steps:
- preparing the new location
- pruning
- Unearth
- Short roots
- Transporting plants
- Planting
Preparing the new location
Dig the trench for the hedge beforehand. Enriching with compost should also be done in advance. If you choose spring to transplant your hedge, we recommend adding fertilizer straight away.
The pruning
Careful topiary before digging is important because a large proportion of the roots remain in the soil when moving. So that the plants are not under-supplied, their size should be adjusted.
The Unearthing
Now use a spade to separate the roots so that you can remove the ball from the soil.
Short roots
Round the ball into a compact structure by cutting back the roots. Make sure to preserve as many small fibrous roots as possible.
Transportation
Within the garden, transport is best done in a wheelbarrow (€2.30 on Amazon). For longer journeys, it is recommended to protect the roots with a linen bag.
Planting
If necessary, remove the linseed protection and place your bushes at a species-appropriate distance and the appropriate depth in the trench that has already been prepared.
Care after moving
The following steps are required for continued he althy growth:
- Stabilization with ropes or posts
- Adequate irrigation
- Frost protection with brushwood or fleece
