By definition, a shrub is a plant with a basiton growth habit, which means that a shrub does not have a single trunk, but rather several woody shoots that sprout from buds close to the ground. Shrubs are perennial (perennial) and very diverse.

What different types of shrubs are there?

There are different types of shrubs, such as evergreen, deciduous, fragrant, poisonous, flowering, thorny, fruit-bearing, wild and ornamental. They offer a variety of design options, food and protection for garden birds and are used as fruit or berry producers.

There are shrubs of different sizes and growth habits, evergreen and deciduous, flowering and non-flowering specimens. Some of them can grow as both a tree and a shrub, such as the gray alder or the hazelnut. In the garden, shrubs are important breeding places and food sources for many garden birds.

Various types of shrubs:

  • Evergreen Shrubs
  • Deciduous (deciduous) shrubs
  • Scented Shrubs
  • Poisonous Bushes
  • Flowering bushes
  • Thornbushes
  • Fruit bushes (fruit, nuts)
  • Wild shrubs
  • Ornamental shrubs

Common Poisonous Shrubs

Some bushes bear inedible fruits or are even poisonous in all parts. If these look particularly tempting, then they don't belong in a garden where small children play (unsupervised). Poisonous shrubs include, for example, laburnum and wisteria, but also yew and boxwood. However, many poisonous bushes are good sources of nutrients for birds and insects.

Flowering ornamental shrubs

There are a large number of flowering ornamental shrubs; they can be divided into subgroups based on the flowering time (spring, summer, autumn and winter flowering shrubs), but also based on the flower color or height (ground cover, dwarf, small - and large shrubs).

If you are looking for your favorite flower color at a specific flowering time, then you are sure to find it. With flowering ornamental shrubs, a garden can be transformed into a sea of flowers all year round.

Shrubs as useful plants

Shrubs also have a permanent place in a kitchen garden. Fruit or berry bushes are often planted in beds, while hazelnut bushes are often planted individually or as a hedge on the property border. Exotic fruit bushes can also be planted in the garden, at least in mild areas without harsh winters. In a harsh area, planting in a container is recommended, provided the shrub can tolerate it.

Tip

Suitable shrubs can be found for every garden. You have a large selection of useful and ornamental shrubs in almost any size and flower color you want.
