Whether for playing football, as a lawn or simply a green oasis: a well-maintained lawn adorns every garden. To ensure that the green area is actually as beautiful as hoped, you should carefully supply the seeds with water during germination - watering several times a day is particularly important, especially in dry phases.
How often and for how long do you have to water lawn seeds?
Lawn seeds should be kept regularly and evenly moist during the germination phase. Water the seed area several times a day for about 10 minutes so that the moisture penetrates at least 3-4 cm deep. Keep the lawn moist until mowing for the first time, then once or twice a week is enough.
Keep evenly moist during the germination phase
Lawn seeds need a lot of moisture to germinate reliably and are therefore extremely susceptible to drought in this sensitive first phase. Once the seeds dry out, they die and will not begin to germinate again even after watering again - it is all the more important that the soil does not become too dry and that the water is supplied regularly. The sowing area should not only be moist on the surface, but also at a depth of around three to four centimeters. You can check this by digging a finger into the soil. Damp means that the substrate should feel something like a squeezed sponge, but under no circumstances should it be really wet: this in turn causes waterlogging and leads to the formation of mold.
Launching the lawn correctly – this is how it works
The lawn seeds are always watered during sowing. However, it is not necessary to soak the seeds in warm water or similar for several hours or days before sowing. To ensure that the seeds germinate properly, you should follow the following schedule:
- Sowing takes place at a constant soil temperature from 8 to 10 °C
- the ideal time is autumn, when the ground is still warm and increased rainfall can be used
- If possible, don't spread the lawn in early spring, only again from around May
- but then you need to water more because it is often very dry at this point
- Law lawn on well-drained soil, if necessary improve it with lime-free sand or similar
- Loose the soil thoroughly and then water thoroughly
- It's best to use a lawn sprinkler or a watering can with a fine attachment
- Moisture should penetrate at least four centimeters deep into the soil
- Spread lawn seeds, distribute evenly with a rake
- Do not cover seeds with soil as grasses need light to germinate
- Keep the seed area evenly moist until about three or five weeks after germination
- water several times a day for about ten minutes during dry periods
Tip
Even if the first green tips are already visible: the greening lawn should still be kept evenly moist until the stalks have grown about ten centimeters high and have been mowed for the first time. After that, only water the lawn once or twice a week.
