The Weigela is generally considered to be quite easy to care for, robust and blooming. Since it also grows quite quickly, it definitely needs enough space. In the wrong location it is possible that the weigela will not bloom, then it should be moved.
How can a weigela be successfully implemented?
To plant a weigela, you should do so as young as possible. Dig a large planting hole, add compost and plant the plant. Older weigelias tolerate moving more poorly and should only be transplanted if necessary.
In principle, a weigela tolerates transplanting quite well, at least while it is still young. After about four years, you should only move weigelia if it is unavoidable, for example because the space is urgently needed for other purposes.
Finding the right place for weigeliums
A weigela thrives particularly well in a location in full sun. This is also where its colorful flowers are at their most lush, while in the shade they hardly or not bloom at all. A fresh to slightly moist and humus-rich soil is beneficial.
A weigela can grow a good half a meter per year, and you should also consider that when choosing a location. This is especially important if you want to plant a large variety of this genus. The distance to the neighboring plants should be about one and a half meters.
Transplanting young weigela
The propagation of weigela is quite easy to do with the help of cuttings. However, you should only move the young plant into the garden after the first winter, even though weigelias are considered quite hardy.
Before moving, dig a sufficiently large planting hole, about one and a half times the size of the root ball, and add a little compost into it. This fertilizer is a small starting aid for easier growth. Plant the plant and press the soil firmly to the roots. Then water your weigela thoroughly. However, there should be no waterlogging.
The most important things in brief:
- Transplant as young as possible
- older weigela does not tolerate moving particularly well
- Do not move home-grown weigela outdoors until after the first winter
- Transplant weigela in the pot about every two years
Tip
The younger your weigela is, the better it tolerates being moved to another location.
