The Ginkgo is quite robust and easy to care for. But that doesn't mean you can't support him. With the right amount of water and fertilizer you promote its growth and also the he alth of your ginkgo tree.

Which fertilizers are suitable for ginkgo trees?

A ginkgo does not necessarily need fertilizer, but nutrient-rich soil promotes growth. Well-rotted compost or manure without a high nitrogen content is ideal. Special bonsai fertilizer is suitable for ginkgo bonsai.

Does the ginkgo need to be fertilized regularly?

Regular fertilization of your ginkgo tree in the garden is not absolutely necessary, but it does prefer a higher nutrient content in the soil. It is therefore recommended to fertilize it about twice a month from spring until the bright yellow autumn colors appear, but not too much.

Alternatively, you can also apply a complete organic fertilizer to your ginkgo twice a year. The first dose should then be given in spring, and you can give the second one in summer. If you cultivate your ginkgo in a bucket or pot, regular fertilization makes sense. The same applies to a ginkgo as a bonsai. Here it is best to use a special bonsai fertilizer (€4.00 on Amazon).

Which fertilizer is best?

Above all, make sure that the nitrogen content in the fertilizer is not too high; excess can easily lead to growth problems such as oversized leaves or long, leafless shoots. Ripe, rotted compost is very suitable, and possibly well-rotted stable manure. However, chicken manure usually contains too much nitrogen, or rather it is released very quickly.

You can safely do without pesticides, the ginkgo is very robust and resistant to most known diseases and pests. Not even s alt or air pollution can harm it. It is also not necessary to spread bark mulch to keep the soil moist; it is better to ventilate it well, i.e. loosen it up every now and then.

The most important things in brief:

  • regular fertilization not absolutely necessary
  • better growth possible through fertilizer
  • better not to use nitrogen-heavy fertilizers
  • ideal fertilizer: compost, well rotted
  • ideal fertilizer for ginkgo as a bonsai: special bonsai fertilizer

Tip

The ginkgo tree thrives best in nutrient-rich soil. It's best to add a portion of compost to the planting hole when planting.
