How to can and preserve pears?

Pears can be preserved by soaking them in sugar stock. Use ripe, undamaged pears; peel, core and quarter them. Sterilize mason jars and fill them with pear pieces and sugar stock. Preserving can be done in a kettle (90 degrees, 30 minutes) or in the oven (150 degrees, 1 hour).

Wake pears in sugar stock

If you want to preserve your pear harvest, make sure that you only use ripe fruits, but they must not be overripe. You should also not use damaged fruit as the preserved product could spoil. Preserved pears last for several years in the jar. However, they lose their flavor after about a year.

Waking in the kettle

  1. Prepare the pears. The fruit is peeled, cored, halved or quartered.
  2. Put the pear pieces in lemon water to prevent them from discoloring during the preparation time.
  3. Sterilize the mason jars you plan to use.
  4. Make a sugar syrup. 500 g of sugar are dissolved in a liter of water and boiled down a little. Spices such as: B. a cinnamon stick or a vanilla pod can be added.
  5. Place the pears as close together as possible in the jars and pour the stock over them. The fruit should be covered and there should still be about a centimeter of space to the top edge of the glass.
  6. Close the jars with screw lids or rubber rings and glass lids.
  7. Now do not place the glasses too close together in the kettle.
  8. Set the machine to 90 degrees and once the temperature is reached, the pears need about half an hour to cook down.
  9. Let the kettle cool down a little, then carefully remove the glasses and let them cool completely under a tea towel.

Waking in the oven

If you don't have a kettle or preserving machine, you can also preserve your pears in the oven. Prepare the pears as directed.

  1. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees.
  2. Place your glasses in the drip pan of the oven or use a large, deep baking dish.
  3. Now add water until the glasses are about two centimeters deep in water.
  4. Place the drip pan on the middle shelf of the oven.
  5. Let the jars boil for one hour at 150 degrees.
  6. After the cooking time is over, let the glasses rest in the switched off oven for half an hour, then take the glasses out and let them cool under a kitchen towel.
