Moss grows readily and abundantly in many home gardens, preferably where no one wants it. Some lawns are more of a moss area, terraces and garden paths often become quite slippery due to moss in wet weather.
Is s alt effective against moss and safe to use?
Using s alt against moss is not recommended as it removes liquid from plants and gets into the groundwater. Alternatives include scarifying, sulfuric ammonia in the lawn and hot water on wood or concrete.
No wonder that there are numerous more or less effective home remedies for moss in the garden and on the lawn. Foods such as cola, vinegar or s alt are also included. Not every garden owner knows that these products can not only be useful but can even cause harm.
How does s alt work against moss?
S alt, when dissolved in water, is absorbed relatively quickly by plants. It then removes fluid and destroys the roots of the plants in question. The moss goes or the plants die. However, the s alt makes no distinction between desired and undesirable plants, it simply destroys them all. For this reason it should never be used on the lawn.
The use of s alt against moss on sidewalks and/or terraces is at least controversial, even if all plants growing between the joints are to be destroyed. Together with the water in which it was dissolved, it passes through the soil into the groundwater and is definitely undesirable there.
What else can I do against moss?
If you want to remove moss from your lawn, scarifying is more effective than using s alt or soda. The use of sulfuric ammonia is also very effective. On wood or concrete you can combat the moss with simply hot water. Combined with a little elbow grease, you can scrub these materials clean.
The most important things in brief:
- works against moss, but is not recommended
- gets through the ground into the groundwater
- Use in the garden is a legal gray area
- Alternative: hot water
- should never be used on lawns
- It is better to scarify the lawn or treat it with sulphate of ammonia
Tip
S alt acts like a weed killer, so it should under no circumstances be applied to the lawn.
