How can I grow a walnut tree in a pot myself?
To grow a walnut tree in a pot yourself, you need fresh walnuts, leaves and garden soil. Remove the green shell, test the nuts for floating, place them on damp leaves in the pot and cover with soil. Protect the pot from rodents and frost and plant the seedlings in the garden after the ice saints.
Growing in the pot explained step by step
- For a strong seedling you need five to six fresh walnuts (not from the supermarket!).
- Remove the green peel.
- Take the floating test to sort out numb nuts (he althy nuts sink to the bottom, unsuitable ones float to the top).
- Take a flower pot (€16.00 on Amazon) and fill it with moist leaves.
- Place the nuts on the leaves.
- Put some garden soil on the nuts.
- Close the pot tightly with wire mesh (keeps rodents away).
- Dig the pot into the ground in your garden (to protect against frost damage).
- The shells open between the end of March and the beginning of April. As a result, roots and shoots appear.
- Transplant the walnuts into a fresh flower pot with garden soil. Now insert the nuts close to the surface.
- Place the pot in a bright, cool location until after the Ice Saints to protect the walnut seeds from frost. Temperatures of two to ten degrees are ideal.
- Keep the potting soil slightly moist.
- After the following ice saints, place the seedlings in your desired location in the garden.
- Water the seedlings regularly in the first few weeks after this measure, especially on warm, dry days.
- In the first year, the plants grow about 25 to 30 centimeters in height.
- Identify the two or three strongest plants from the seedlings. Carefully pull everyone else out of the ground.
- Next spring you will choose the most beautiful walnut seedlings. Cut off the weaker plants below the root neck (in the ground). This will prevent these specimens from growing further. Attention: Don't pull any more here so as not to damage the roots of your chosen pupil.
- In the third or fourth year it will be time for the first cut.
Tip
In order to accelerate growth and produce the first harvest more quickly, grafting makes sense.
