In its homeland, warm Australia, the eucalyptus grows up to 100 meters high. In this country it reaches a height of up to 30 meters. However, with the right cut you can give the deciduous tree a very unusual look. If you follow the tips on this page, your guests will soon be amazed at a handsome bonsai tree.
How do I care for a eucalyptus bonsai?
To care for a eucalyptus bonsai, the plant needs a bright location, regular watering without waterlogging, weekly fertilization in the growth phase and regular pruning. The Eucalyptus gunii variety is particularly suitable for bonsai forms due to its slower growth rate.
Suitable variety
The eucalyptus not only grows tall but also very quickly. Pruning usually also promotes growth. Keeping a bonsai therefore requires a lot of effort. Unless you choose the Eucalyptus gunii variety. This eucalyptus species only grows 40 cm per year and thus allows it to maintain a low height.
Possible styles
- Double trunk
- Upright shape
- Inclined shape
Care
Location
So that the bluish shimmering leaves of the eucalyptus do not fade, it is best to place it in a bright location. In summer, a sunny spot on the terrace is ideal. Make sure there is enough light even in winter. Your bonsai has few demands when it comes to temperature.
Pouring
The eucalyptus actually only needs a little water. In bonsai form you should water it regularly. The only thing that needs to be avoided is waterlogging.
Fertilize
The fertilizer application depends on the room temperature. In cool locations, fertilizing twice a week with a liquid fertilizer (€10.00 on Amazon) is sufficient. During the growth phase, you can increase the dose to once a week.
Cutting
The most important care aspect of a eucalyptus bonsai is cutting. The Eucalyptus gunii only maintains its growth habit if it is regular.
- You have to work out the bonsai shape little by little.
- Cut the protruding side shoots.
- Short large plants to 50 cm.
- Cut the new shoots back to two leaf bases.
Wiring
Wiring is also part of the bonsai design for other tree species. However, the eucalyptus has a very sensitive bark, which is why this technique is not recommended.
Repotting
The eucalyptus bonsai must be repotted into a larger container every two to three years.
Wintering
Unlike conventional eucalyptus, the gunii variety is winter-resistant down to -20°C. But it is important to have enough light.
