If you want to create a garden pond, you have the choice: should it be quick and easy with a prefabricated pool? Or do you have to satisfy a certain ambition to design the pond completely individually? Then it's time to build your own pond liner.
How do I create a foil pond in the garden?
To create a liner pond, dig out the soil, remove sharp stones and roots, fill in building sand, lay protective fleece and pond liner, fix them with stones and cover them with gravel. Then plant and fill the pond gradually.
Why foil pond?
A garden pond constructed with foil is more difficult and time-consuming to create than a prefabricated pool pond. Apart from that, this variant also has some advantages. Especially for individualists. Because it enables:
- Free choice of form
- Larger pond area
- Tendency to lower material costs
Especially if you generally like to build your own home projects, building a pond with foil is recommended. Because here you can, on the one hand, determine the shape and size of your water oasis yourself and, on the other hand, let off steam.
Even if you are a bargain hunter, the foil pond can be the cheaper option. At least for the basic material itself, i.e. foil and protective fleece, you have to calculate less than for a prefabricated pool. If you then do the digging yourself with your own muscle power and use the pond plants as a natural sewage treatment plant instead of a filter pump system, you are fine (cheap).
Which slide?
Garden centers usually offer 3 different types of pond liner (€10.00 on Amazon):
- Standard film made of PVC - it is the cheapest option, robust, fish and plant friendly and available in different colors, but a bit stiff and heavy
- PE film – it is a little more supple and lighter, very durable and also fish and plant friendly, but a little more expensive and difficult to repair
- EPDM film – it is considered the professional version, but is also the most expensive. It is very tear-resistant and elastic, making it easy to lay, but also sensitive to mechanical damage and then difficult to repair
How to build your garden pond with liner
Once you have determined and marked the shape and size of your pond, dig out the soil. Pay attention to the different depth zones, which should not be too sloping. Remove sharp stones and roots as thoroughly as possible and first fill the hollow with building sand. Then first lay a layer of protective fleece, then the pond liner.
This should be as wrinkle-free as possible. Then fix it with larger stones and finally add a layer of gravel. Then all you have to do is plant as desired and fill it with water. It's best to proceed in stages.
