A terrarium with beautiful plants and fascinating animals is much more than “just” a particularly decorative element in your private four walls. It's your own little world that enriches and expands your horizons. If you would like to integrate swamp plants into your terrarium, specific requirements must be met.

What conditions do swamp plants need in the terrarium?

Swamp plants thrive in terrariums with high humidity and constantly wet substrate, such as in forest or rainforest terrariums. The temperatures should be between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius and the plants should be fertilized regularly.

About the requirements of marsh plants

Swamp plants usually live in or around garden ponds or in nature in or around various bodies of water. However, you can also cultivate them freely in the room or in a terrarium - but only if the conditions are right.

Every marsh plant needs a well-humid environment, both in terms of soil and air. This means that a constantly wet substrate and the highest possible air humidity are absolutely necessary in order to offer marsh plants a habitat in which they feel completely comfortable.

In addition, most marsh plants value brightness. And some species require extremely high levels of nutrients, so they need to be fertilized regularly. All of these points should be taken into account when considering sprucing up your terrarium with swamp plants.

These types of terrariums are suitable

Considering their requirements, you cannot simply embed swamp plants in any terrarium. Basically there are only two types of terrariums:

  • Forest terrarium (semi-humid terrarium)
  • Rainforest Terrarium

Forest terrarium with swamp plants

The temperatures in a forest terrarium are generally around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius - with a humidity of around 50 to 70 percent. Compared to the rainforest terrarium, it is relatively the same temperature here, but a little less humid.

Rainforest terrarium with swamp plants

A rainforest terrarium offers tropical warmth and plenty of humidity. Temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius and humidity between 70 and 100 percent are typical.

Recommendation: If you choose a rainforest terrarium, you have a larger choice when it comes to suitable swamp plants. If you want it to be a forest terrarium, you have to make sure when putting together the plants that the plants are really suitable for these conditions.

Notes on the plant-animal combination

It is of course most beautiful to enliven a terrarium with both plants and animals. However, you have to be very careful here. Herbivorous animals could quickly destroy your plants and possibly cause damage if the plants are poisonous. So choose the marsh plants wisely like the animals.
