If you can't create your own garden pond but still want to cultivate marsh plants, you also have the option of keeping them in containers for most species. You can find out in this article what you need to pay attention to in this context.
How do you care for swamp plants in a container?
Swamp plants can be grown in a container by planting them in nutrient-poor soil, watering them regularly and keeping them in lime-free water. High humidity, a fertilizer supply and a suitable location are also important for them to thrive.
Keeping swamp plants in the pot – the care measures
Place your swamp plants in suitable planters. As a substrate, you should use nutrient-poor soil to prevent unwanted algae growth - the combination of lots of water and nutrient-rich substrate could lead to this.
Place the respective planter in a saucer or planter that is filled with water so that the roots of the plant are in the wet.
Important: Use lime-free water (preferably rainwater). There are only a few swamp plants that are reasonably tolerant of lime.
Regular watering is the be-all and end-all
Swamp plants naturally always need enough water. That's why it must be a matter of course for you to water your plants regularly. The root ball must not dry out, otherwise the swamp plant will quickly die.
Attention: Please note that most swamp plants tolerate and even desire waterlogging. However, that doesn't mean that they want to be completely submerged. Although marsh plants are often classified as aquatic plants, they require slightly different living conditions than their closer relatives.
Recommendation: To prevent drying out, it makes sense to spray the marsh plants with room temperature water every day.
High humidity is essential for survival
In addition to the moisture in the soil, the moisture in the air also plays an important role. The humidity must be high - it should be at least 60 percent, preferably even higher. That's why swamp plants in pots have no place in the living room or office. If you want to keep the plants in the apartment or house, the bathroom and the kitchen are the most adequate spaces.
In order to keep the humidity constantly high, it is advisable to position a container filled with water next to the swamp plant. Ultimately, all measures that make the indoor climate more “swamp plant-friendly” are worth supporting.
Recommendation: If you have a garden, it is advisable to place the swamp plants in a pot outside. For this you should use frost-proof planters - at least for those plants that are hardy. You have to bring frost-sensitive specimens into the house in winter anyway.
Don’t forget to fertilize
So that the swamp plants can recharge their batteries despite the nutrient-poor substrate, they need to be supplied with commercially available liquid fertilizer (€9.00 at Amazon) for potted plants once a month between April and September. But: Fertilize sparingly!
