Are wild apples poisonous?

Wild apples themselves are not poisonous, but their seeds contain amygdalin, which can release hydrogen cyanide in low concentrations. Consuming large amounts of seeds can lead to symptoms of poisoning such as upset stomach, nausea and headaches. The fruits should only be consumed cooked.

Fruits

The woody fruits ripen from September. They are yellowish to green in color and some have red cheeks. Since the fruits contain high levels of fruit acids and tannins, they taste very sour and bitter when raw. Therefore they are only recommended for consumption when cooked.
