It's humming and scratching in the attic or in the roller shutter box? Then it may be that a colony of wasps has settled in your area. A not entirely unproblematic thing, especially for allergy sufferers. In this case, nest removal is often necessary, but should be left to professionals.
When should you have a wasp nest removed?
Having a wasp nest removed is necessary if there is a serious danger to people, e.g. if there are insect allergies or small children in the household. Professional removal by experts, such as nature conservation authorities or beekeepers, costs around 100 euros.
When a wasp nest removal is necessary
It is not always absolutely necessary to remove a wasp nest. There are some arguments against it:
- Some species of wasps are protected species
- Removing nests is dangerous and complicated
- Involves costs
- Wasps are also useful in the garden
On the first point: Some species of wasps are particularly protected by the Federal Nature Conservation Act and may not be harmed, captured or killed “without reasonable cause”. The species that belong to this and that can cause problems for us humans with their nests are primarily hornets. Whether there is a “reasonable reason” must always be assessed individually. The close proximity of the wasp nest to human living space is usually not enough. There must be an insect allergy or there must be small children living in the household.
If the authorities give the green light, a wasp nest may be removed. However, this is a difficult and quite dangerous undertaking - so it should be undertaken by a specialist if possible. These could be employees of a nature conservation authority or beekeepers, for example. They have the necessary experience with the animals and also professional equipment.
The professional removal or relocation of a wasp nest costs around 100 euros, depending on the situation and effort.
But for reasons other than financial ones, you should think carefully about whether you can somehow come to terms with the wasps. The main reasons for this are:
- Wasp colony only lasts a few months anyway
- They are effective pest and spider killers
A wasp colony only exists from around April to October - and they are actually only really active in late summer from August to September. Otherwise, despite their individual states, they are still relatively self-absorbed and therefore tolerable. So if you can get comfortable with them until the fall, when most of the animals die, you should do that.
Arachnophobes and those plagued by aphids should also take comfort in the fact that wasps eat these unpleasant animals with great appetite.
