Which location should you choose for Norway maple?
Norway maple prefers locations with sunny to semi-shady locations and normal garden soil. It thrives in almost all types of soil, except boggy, waterlogged peat soils with an acidic pH value below 5. Make sure the correct distance to walls and other obstacles is at least 300 cm.
Norway maple is site-tolerant – with one exception
Natural maple demonstrates its large presence early in the year when it is in bloom. When other deciduous trees are still bare, Acer platanoides boast their yellowish panicle flowers. The high distribution density suggests that the beautiful tree thrives in any location. In fact, Norway maple proves to be quite tolerant, with one exception:
- Growth in all types of soil, except boggy, waterlogged peat soils with acidic pH below 5
- Optimum in sunny to partially shaded locations with normal garden soil
The sunnier the location, the more colorful the autumn leaves are. This also applies to picturesque subspecies and varieties that have colorful leaves throughout the gardening season, such as blood maple 'Crimson King'. In a low-light location, the leaves on the Drummond Norway maple lose their creamy white border and turn completely green.
Consider root growth when choosing a location
When choosing a location, the correct distance from walls, terraces and neighboring plants is more important than the light and soil conditions. Norway maple spreads its roots flat and expansive. Therefore, please maintain a distance of at least 300 cm from all types of obstacles.
Tip
A Norway maple is too oversized as a house tree for the front garden. However, you don't have to miss out on the magnificent foliage and spectacular autumn color of an Acer platanoides at this location. Globe maple Globosum is the refined version of the Norway maple. The decorative tree remains at an average height of 450 cm and impresses with a spherical crown.
