Balcony flowers are supposed to make our time outdoors more beautiful. But first they have to sprout leaves and form buds. That takes time. You should therefore come into the balcony box as early as possible. But as different as the plants are, so is their planting time.
When should you plant balcony flowers?
Balcony flowers can be planted almost all year round: in winter, crocuses and snowdrops are suitable. Spring plants include hyacinths, tulips and pansies. After the Ice Saints in May, Snapdragon, Elfenspiegel, Busy Lieschen and others are added. Fall flowers are fall crocuses, while spring bloomers are planted in September to December.
Planting time is always
Yes, you read that right. For the balcony, every day is a potential planting day. But that doesn't mean that every plant can enter the balcony on any given day. When is the optimal planting time for a crop depends, among other things, on these factors:
- their heyday
- your sensitivity to frost
Tip
When buying an unfamiliar balcony plant, ask about the best planting time so that it develops optimally.
Planting in winter
Some flowers delight us with their blossoms early in the year. Accordingly, they must be planted early. In winter, for example, crocuses and snowdrops can be planted in the ground. However, this is only possible if the soil in the flower box is not frozen.
Spring as planting time
In spring, early spring bloomers such as hyacinths or tulips follow. To prevent them from freezing in severe frosts, they are covered with pine branches. Pansies are also planted in March.
After the Ice Saints
As soon as frosts are no longer expected from mid-May, other flowers can follow, ideally grown indoors:
- Snapdragons
- Elf Mirror
- Hardworking Lieschen
- Slipper Flower
- Ice Begonias
After the Ice Saints, geraniums, bluebells, daisies and petunias are also planted directly in flower boxes.
Tip
Get overwintered balcony flowers outside again from mid-May. However, make sure to acclimate them to the sun slowly.
Summer planting
In summer the flower boxes are full of flowers in the most beautiful blooms. If free space can still be found, autumn-flowering plants such as autumn crocuses can be planted now.
Planting in autumn
Spring bloomers are planted from September and until December if the weather is good. Among them: hyacinths, crocuses, daffodils, snowdrops, tulips, March cups, imperial crowns, ray anemones, squill and daffodils.
Smaller perennials such as liverworts, violets and Adonis roses are also planted in autumn. However, they are brought to the cellar to overwinter.
