Do you still have a few flower bulbs left in January? Unfortunately, the autumn planting date is long past and spring is still a long way off. So what to do with it? Don't worry: the train hasn't quite left yet! This is how you can plant.
Summer bloomers
Summer bloomers come from consistently warm regions of the world; they cannot survive frost unscathed. However, in January we are in the middle of winter. Outdoors, there may still be many frosty months waiting for the plants.
January is therefore out of the question as a planting date for summer bloomers. Although they can grow in warm rooms, this usually begins in February.
Spring bloomers
Spring bloomers are planted in the fall. Depending on the weather, the planting date is between mid-September and the end of December. However, since these onion plants are hardy, there is nothing wrong with January from this point of view.
If you discover a few forgotten flower bulbs in the garden shed or get a special bargain at the hardware store, you can still plant the flower bulbs in January. However, it may well be that the ground is already frozen by then. This makes planting impossible.
Tip
Plant the flower bulbs in planting bowls and place them in a cool cellar so that the bulbs get the cold stimulus they need.
Delayed rooting
The reason why spring bloomers are planted in autumn is so that they can take root before the harsh winter. However, if they are not planted until January, rooting is made more difficult by the cold and is therefore delayed.
Growth disorders
It may be that the bulbs planted in January do not sprout optimally. Growth disturbances are observed, especially with tulips and daffodils, after planting in January. For example, they can sprout lower. But in the following year these defects no longer appear.
Later flowering
Since the flower bulbs can root later, their flowering time will be delayed accordingly. But that's still better than throwing the flower bulbs away unused.
Cultivate in the apartment
In January, individual onions can also be used to decorate your own four walls. If they have already had a cold period in the cellar, they can be pushed forward in January:
- put individual flower bulbs in the glass
- plant in a pot
- cover with wax
Note:You should definitely keep flower bulbs that are already sprouting in a warm room in January. Only the onion is hardy in the garden soil. The green, on the other hand, is sensitive and would freeze in sub-zero temperatures.
