Gold privet has attractively patterned leaves that are close together. But the growth behavior of this plant also contributes to its popularity. Speed and size potential are two important key points. We'll also tell you how you can influence both.

How fast does a golden privet grow and what height does it reach?

The growth of the golden privet is 30 to 60 cm in height and width annually. It can reach a maximum height of 2.5 to 5 m and a width of 1 to 2 m. Optimal growth conditions are humus-rich, nutrient-rich soil, sufficient light and regular fertilization.

Growth rate

Compared to other types of privet, golden privet grows moderately fast. Its annual growth is still impressive at 30 to 60 cm. This increase value applies equally to height and width.

Height

Different information can be found regarding the maximum achievable height. While some nurseries assume a height of 2.5 m, others promise more. In some cases, with appropriate training and care, there is talk of up to 5 m. The height is certainly also a question of age and the living conditions under which the golden privet has to grow.

Tip

If you can't wait patiently for a young privet plant to grow, you can buy a large specimen right away. However, if the height is 2 to 3 m, the purchase price is several hundred euros.

Width

The golden privet grows in width as well as in height. On average it reaches a diameter of 1 to 1.5 m. But it can also be 2 m. For a hedge, 2-3 plants per meter are recommended. Here the plants set tighter boundaries for each other.

Growth habit

This shrub grows well branched. The branches grow upright. Its growth habit is described as vase-shaped. But the gold privet owes its final shape to the scissors (€14.00 at Amazon). This is often used by him. On the one hand, cutting is useful to limit its height and width. On the other hand, this encourages dense branching.

A golden privet can even be trained with scissors so that it grows as a standard tree with a round, well-shaped crown.

Factors promoting growth

How well the golden privet grows depends on its location andthe care it receives. While it appears well-formed in any location, its colorful coloring suffers considerably when there is a lack of light. It turns green.

It grows particularly well in a humus-rich, nutrient-rich substrate. Although it tolerates slightly acidic soil, the plant loves lime and grows faster with this element. The following factors also have a positive effect on its growth:

  • a deeply loosened soil with no tendency to waterlogging
  • regular fertilization from March to mid-August

Tip

If you want a golden privet to grow well after transplanting, it is recommended to transplant it on a frost-free day between mid-October and the end of March.
