Many balconies are adorned with a real splendor of flowers. The selection of suitable plants is almost unmanageable, and noble geraniums are also one of them. They come from South Africa and are certainly not the worst choice with their colorful flower umbels.
Why are noble geraniums good for the balcony?
Noble geraniums are ideal balcony plants that bloom from April to October. They need a sunny to partially shaded location, plenty of water and nutrients. Plant them in larger pots or balcony boxes and ensure frost-free conditions after the ice saints.
Prefer and plant pelargoniums for the balcony
Noble geraniums are a beautiful balcony decoration. You can buy the plants in spring or grow or propagate them yourself. Sowing should take place in January or February so that the young plants are large enough to be planted from the end of May and do not bloom too late.
Cuttings are best cut in August for the following year. Ideally, you should use shoots that are no longer very young without buds and flowers. Shoots that are too young rot easily, and shoots that are too old no longer root so well. Good growing substrate (€6.00 at Amazon), warmth, consistent moisture and plenty of light make it easier for the cuttings to form roots. The young plants overwinter in a bright and moderately warm place.
It is best to repot geraniums purchased in spring straight away, as the pots used are usually too small. The planter should have a capacity of around ten to 20 liters. Both pots and classic balcony boxes are suitable. The noble geranium cannot tolerate lime, but it can tolerate fresh to moist soil.
When are the noble geraniums allowed outside?
The very frost-sensitive noble geraniums are only allowed to move to the balcony after the Ice Saints. Beforehand, you should slowly get used to the cool air and the sun, ideally every hour. The exotic plants from South Africa do not tolerate temperatures below around 8 °C well. The ideal location is sunny or slightly shady, but not in the blazing midday sun.
Properly care for noble geraniums on the balcony
The more luxuriantly your relatively easy-care geraniums bloom, the higher their nutrient and water requirements. Ideally, the root ball should never dry out. It's best to use your finger to check when it's time to water again. Regular cleaning is recommended during flowering.
