Growing and propagating your own houseplants can be a fulfilling hobby. The Ficus Ginseng can also be propagated yourself. This is possible both by sowing seeds and by cutting cuttings.

What is the best way to propagate Ficus Ginseng?

Ficus Ginseng can be propagated by sowing or cuttings. Germinable seeds are available online and at around 25°C they will germinate in 2-3 weeks. Cuttings at least 5 cm long also root in 2-3 weeks at approx. 25-30°C.

Where can I get germinable seeds?

The biggest difficulty when sowing Ficus Ginseng is probably obtaining the seeds; they are not particularly often found in stores. You're most likely to find what you're looking for on the Internet, possibly under the “Bonsai” category, as the plant can easily be grown as a bonsai.

But search with the correct botanical name: Ficus microcarpa, because there are numerous other Ficus species and the risk of confusion is sometimes great. By the way, the German name for the Ficus Ginseng is laurel fig.

Sowing Ficus Ginseng

Sowing itself is not difficult, you just have to scatter the fine-grained seeds on the moist growing substrate and press them down a little. Now keep the seeds evenly moist and warm. At around 25°C they germinate after around two to three weeks. You can transplant strong young plants into normal potting soil.

The most important thing about sowing:

  • Seeds difficult to obtain
  • Sowing possible
  • Germination temperature: approx. 25 °C
  • Germination time: approx. 2 to 3 weeks

Propagation by cuttings

Vegetative propagation is promising. To do this, cut young, strong shoots at least five centimeters long from your Ficus Ginseng. Remove all but the top two pairs of leaves. To further reduce energy consumption, you can shorten the remaining leaves a little. In an evenly moist growing substrate, your cuttings should root within two to three weeks at around 25 °C.

Draw cuttings step by step:

  • Cut head or partial cuttings at least 5 cm long
  • defoliate except for 2 pairs of leaves
  • If necessary, shorten any remaining leaves
  • insert into moist growing substrate
  • Put transparent foil over the growing pot
  • keep evenly moist
  • Rooting temperature: approx. 25 °C to 30 °C
  • Rooting time: approx. 2 to 3 weeks

Tip

When the humidity is high, the cuttings of your Ficus Ginseng root particularly easily. Regular ventilation reduces the risk of mold formation.
