It's not just the roots of this tropical plant that require plenty of water. She even wants to surround her foliage with moisture all year round. That's why the sometimes dry air in this country can really ruin your existence. Your owner must provide balance, but not overdo it. Because too much moisture is not good either.
How should you water a Guzmania properly?
Water the Guzmania by moistening the plant's soil normally and adding additional water to the leaf funnel. Use room temperature, low-lime water and check the humidity regularly to avoid waterlogging. In summer the water requirement increases.
When does it need to be watered?
The watering can must be picked up at the latest when the substrate threatens to dry out completely. To ensure that this time is not missed, the soil must be checked regularly. The finger test has also proven successful here. If the top layer is already dry, the plant can tolerate a portion of water.
Prevent waterlogging
If a dry root ball is supplied with plenty of water, this can also be problematic. While an appropriate amount of water quenches thirst optimally, if there is too much water, water will remain in the planter. If the plant's roots float in water, they will quickly react with root rot. This must be prevented.
Never leave excess water in the saucer or planter for a long time. You can tell whether you have watered too much after just a few minutes if you lift the plant slightly and take a look.
Tip
Put larger stones in the planter and place the plant on them. This means that a small amount of water can always remain in the pot without the roots floating in it. The subsequent evaporation ensures moist air.
Irring water requirements
Do not shock the plant by watering it with water that is too cold. Let it reach room temperature first.
In addition to the quantity, the quality of the water is also crucial. Guzmania is considered sensitive to limescale. Therefore, the water from the tap is not suitable for immediate use. It needs to be descaled first.
The right watering method
Watering Guzmania is a little different than other plants:
- water the plant's soil normally
- add additional water into the leaf funnel
Increase in demand in summer
Note that this type of bromeliad has a higher water requirement in summer. On hot days it even makes sense to spray the plant daily. Of course also with low-lime water. Since it prefers moist air all year round, you can make moisturizing easier by placing the plant in a damp but bright bathroom.
Tip
When a Guzmania flowers, the rest of the plant soon dies too. Remember to grow new plants from the sprouted children.
