The crown of fame is a heat-spoiled climbing plant that cannot stay in our garden bed all year round. That's what it says here year after year: plant in spring, dig up again in autumn. It can only remain in a mobile pot once planted. This is how it's done.
How do you plant the crown of glory correctly?
Planting the crown of glory (Gloriosa rothschildiana) begins in spring by carefully placing the tuber in a pot with a drainage layer and loose substrate. After germination, it should be lightly fertilized, initially placed indoors and later outdoors (from mid-May) in a sunny location.
Planting time outside
Since the crown of glory, offered. Gloriosa rothschildiana, which does not tolerate frost, may only be planted outside or put out in a pot from mid-May. Such a late start to the vegetation phase automatically results in a later start to flowering. Almost every owner is bothered by this, which is why they allow them to be carried out in the house.
Time to advance
In autumn the crown of glory was brought into the house to overwinter. Either as a naked bulb or still in its pot. The bare tubers must be planted for cultivation. Even specimens that have overwintered in a pot may need a new, larger pot and fresh soil. At the end of February/beginning of March you should put this project on your to-do list.
This is how forwarding works
Before you start planting, you should examine each tuber carefully to see whether it is still in perfect condition. How to plant:
- First add a drainage layer of coarse material to the pot.
- Then fill it up to about 8 cm below the edge with a loose substrate. A mixture of potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon), leaf mold and compost is ideal.
- Place the tuber on the ground and add a 3-5 cm thick layer of soil over it.
- Pour on the crown of glory.
- Place the pot at least 20 °C warm and bright.
- As soon as the first shoots appear, place the pot a little cooler.
- You can now fertilize the crown of fame a little.
Tip
Wear gloves when planting Gloriosa. This plant is poisonous, especially the tuber.
Get a breath of fresh air
On warm, sunny days, the pot can be placed outside, even if the frost season is not yet over. You just have to keep an eye on the weather and, if necessary, bring the Gloriosa back into the house.
Planting outside
From mid-May, the crown of glory can finally go outdoors. You can either leave it in the pot or plant it in garden soil.
- choose a sunny spot
- with morning and midday sun
- the soil should be humus and permeable
- maintain planting depth
- pour well
