As with many palm species, the Phoenix Canariensis initially grows broadly and does not form a trunk. Only after a few years does the growth form that you probably have in mind when you think of these plants appear: a tuft of arching, feathery fronds grows from a high trunk without side branches.
How is the growth of the Phoenix Canariensis?
The Phoenix Canariensis first grows wide before forming a trunk. This is caused by dead fronds that are shed in nature. Cultivated palm trees should not be pruned as they tolerate it poorly.
Lack of secondary thickness growth
Unlike trees, palm trees only have a single growth point, the palm heart, from which the leaves sprout. The trunk only forms over the years through the dead fronds that are shed in nature. For cultivated plants, you can cut them off about two centimeters from the trunk as soon as they are completely dry.
Tip
The Canary Islands date palm can reach an impressive size. Therefore, give it enough space so that the beautiful leaflets can be shown to advantage. Do not prune the palm tree, as the attractive plant tolerates this poorly.
