Coming from a distance, the trumpet flower in this country has to come to terms with an unfamiliar climate. Only if it succeeds can it bloom for longer than one summer. Some species do this easily or better with each year of life, while others don't do it at all.
Is the trumpet flower hardy?
The trumpet flower is available in different species, with the American trumpet flower (Campsis radicans) and the large climbing trumpet (Campsis tagliabuana) being hardy. The Chinese trumpet flower (Campsis grandiflora), on the other hand, is sensitive to frost and should overwinter in a frost-free winter quarters.
Different species, different winter hardiness
We know three different types of this climbing plant, which is also known as the climbing trumpet:
- the American trumpet flower (Campsis radicans)
- the Chinese trumpet flower (Campsis grandiflora)
- the hybrid Great Climbing Trumpet (Campsis tagliabuana)
The Chinese trumpet flower is sensitive to frost. The other two types are different. The American trumpet flower varieties are considered hardy down to -15 °C. Hybrid of the Great Climbing Trumpet cooked down to -20 °C.
Importance for cultivation
The Chinese trumpet flower cannot be continuously cultivated outdoors in our latitudes. In order not to have to do without this attractive plant, you can plant it in a large pot. This species remains mobile, which is essential for safe overwintering.
The large climbing trumpet and the American trumpet flower can develop well in a protected place in the garden. A heat-storing wall nearby is ideal.
Protect young specimens
Young plants of the two hardy species are not yet sufficiently protected against frost. As long as their shoots are not woody, they need additional protection in winter. The base of the plant must be covered with a thick layer of leaves or brushwood. The tendrils themselves can be wrapped with fleece (€34.00 on Amazon).
Tip
If you plan to propagate the trumpet flower yourself, you should overwinter the delicate plants indoors for the first winter and only plant them out the following spring.
Overwintering trumpet flowers in the pot
The Chinese trumpet should overwinter in a frost-free winter quarters. A bright place with a temperature between 10 and 12 °C is ideal. Even during this time, care for the plant must not rest, but is limited to watering as needed.
Such a quarter is also ideal for other species that are planted in pots. But you can also overwinter outside in a sheltered place. But not without first being wrapped in fleece (€34.00 on Amazon) and placed on a Styrofoam plate.
