Miscanthus is considered easy to care for, and not without good reason. However, that doesn't mean that this ornamental grass doesn't need any attention. Its nutrient requirements can definitely be rated as high. The miscanthus doesn't require too much work.

Do you have to fertilize miscanthus?

Miscanthus has a high nutrient requirement and should be fertilized regularly, especially in poor soil or in container cultivation. Use commercial organic fertilizer, mature compost, or slow-release fertilizer in spring. If the soil is very nutrient-rich, no fertilization is necessary.

Does miscanthus need to be fertilized?

The need for fertilization depends on the nutrient supply in the soil. In very nutrient-rich humus soil, practically no fertilizer is necessary. However, this is rarely present. Therefore, regular fertilization is recommended. This is done either regularly or shortly before budding in spring with a slow-release fertilizer.

Should I fertilize when planting?

Fertilization when planting miscanthus is definitely recommended. If available, add some ripe, well-rotted compost directly into the planting hole. Alternatively, use a good organic fertilizer. Plant the miscanthus in a pot with new, fresh potting soil, then no fertilizer is required, the soil contains enough nutrients for several months.

Does Miscanthus need special fertilizer?

You can supply all types of miscanthus with a commercially available garden fertilizer. Organic fertilizer is preferable as it promotes soil activity. An organic-mineral fertilizer, for example with guano (€15.00 on Amazon), is often recommended, which is intended to sustainably activate humus formation. A little bamboo fertilizer, on the other hand, supports the formation of particularly stable stalks and attractive leaf coloring.

Do all types of miscanthus need the same care?

Basically, the care of the different types of miscanthus does not differ significantly. All of them have rather high nutrient requirements, although this depends on the size of the respective plant and its location. If it is sunny and the soil may be dry, then the miscanthus needs more water than in the shade or in the moist soil at the edge of the pond.

The most important things in brief:

  • high nutrient requirements
  • Fertilization required: especially in poor soil or cultivation in containers
  • no fertilization: in the first months after planting and in very nutrient-rich soil
  • suitable: slow-release fertilizer in spring or mature compost

Tip

You don't need to buy special fertilizer for your miscanthus, standard organic fertilizer is sufficient.
