Surely you have already admired miscanthus with fine, elegantly overhanging leaves in a park or garden. It may have been the 'Eulalia' variety bred by Karl Foerster, which is relatively old and quite well known.

How do I properly care for the Miscanthus Eulalia?

The Miscanthus 'Eulalia' prefers a sunny location and fresh, slightly moist soil. Care includes regular watering, especially after planting, annual fertilization and pruning in spring to about 10 cm in length. The delicate plant can grow up to 1.5 m high and flowers rarely.

Location and soil

Almost all types of miscanthus like it warm and sunny. While many of them thrive in partial shade, 'Eulalia' prefers a location in full sun. However, the soil should be slightly moist or at least fresh.

Planting the miscanthus “Eulalia”

You can plant the miscanthus 'Eulalia' (bot. Miscanthus sinensis Gracilimus) very well as a solitary plant, but also in a group. The distance to the neighboring plant should be at least one meter, but a planting distance of 1.3 meters is better.

The miscanthus 'Eulalia' is also suitable for planting in a pot. The bucket should have a volume of at least 15 liters, or more for an older plant. You can also use the reeds as a privacy screen on the balcony.

Does the Miscanthus 'Eulalia' bloom?

The Miscanthus 'Eulalia' is quite capable of flowering. The flowering time is in August and September. However, 'Eulalia' only shows its silvery-white flower fronds where it feels really comfortable and when it is warm enough. This miscanthus rarely flowers. You shouldn't expect this at all in the shade.

Watering, fertilizing and cutting correctly

This miscanthus is also quite easy to care for. In the ideal location, almost no funding is required. Depending on the weather and the nature of the soil, additional water may be required. The miscanthus should be watered regularly, especially immediately after planting. Fertilization, on the other hand, is only necessary once a year. In spring you should cut the miscanthus back to around 10 centimeters long.

The most important things in brief:

  • very delicate and elegant
  • up to about 1.5 m high
  • Planting distance: approx. 1.3 m
  • Location: as sunny as possible
  • Soil: fresh to slightly moist
  • Flowers: silver-white, blooms rarely
  • hardy

The miscanthus 'Eulalia' is particularly delicate and decorative with its fine, narrow leaves.
