The vacation should be the most wonderful time of the year and should not offer any unpleasant surprises when you return. It is therefore important that your potted plants are always well supplied with water, even when you are away.

How does holiday watering for potted plants work?

To water potted plants during your vacation, different methods can be used, depending on the length of your absence: For a few days, PET bottles with holes in the lid or placing the plants in a tub filled with water are suitable. For longer periods, the use of planters with water storage or automatic irrigation systems is recommended.

Watering for a few days

Perhaps you have a nice neighbor, friend or relative who waters your potted plants during your vacation, then consider yourself lucky. Not everyone has this very convenient option for (mutual) help; some people may not have strangers in their home. In this case, you will have to think about something else so that your potted plants can survive your absence well.

If you are only away for a few days, relatively simple measures can ensure the necessary watering of your potted plants. The easiest and cheapest option is to quickly make your own using an old PET bottle. All you have to do is drill a hole in the lid, fill the bottle with water and place it upside down in the flower pot so that it cannot tip over.

You can also place smaller planters in a large tub that you have filled with clay granules and water. However, the planters must have a hole in the bottom. The plants then use this to draw the water out of the tub. Alternatively, an old zinc or plastic tub is also suitable for this method of irrigation.

Automatic watering for a longer vacation

You can get planters with a built-in water reservoir from specialist retailers for just a few euros (€75.00 at Amazon). If this is big enough, it will last for several days. However, prices vary greatly depending on the quality and features of the system.

If you have a lot of potted plants or you travel often, then it might be worth having automatic watering for your plants. You can already plan for this if, for example, you want to design your terrace with potted plants. Such a system relieves you of the (annoying?) watering all year round.

The most important things in brief:

  • different methods suitable for different periods of time
  • automatic irrigation expensive but reliable
  • homemade irrigation is usually only suitable for a few days

Tip

You don't necessarily have to spend a lot of money on holiday watering, there are also cost-effective methods.
