When are martens active and at what time?

Martens are nocturnal animals that are primarily active at dusk and in the deep darkness. They are particularly aggressive during the mating season from the beginning of July to the beginning of September and young martens are on the move in April/June.

When are martens active?

Martens are nocturnal. The exact time at which they leave their shelter varies from animal to animal - just like humans, there are early risers and late risers. Some martens are already on the move at dusk, while others only set off when it gets dark.

What time of year are martens particularly active?

In the summer, many car owners complain about bitten cables in the engine compartment - this is no coincidence: the mating season of martens runs from the beginning of July to the beginning of September and at this time the males are particularly aggressive and react violently to the presence of competitors, e.g. in a warm engine compartment. In April / June, however, you can hear clumsy marten cubs taking their first steps.

Where can martens be found?

In our country, martens usually mean two species: the stone marten, also known as the house marten, and the pine marten. While the domestic marten, as its name suggests, likes to stay close to houses, the pine marten prefers forests and meadows and is rarely seen near people. Stone martens, on the other hand, prefer to live in attics, walls or barns.

Tip

Martens are also active in winter because they do not hibernate. However, they reduce their activities to save energy.
