As an evergreen tree, the tree of life is an ideal privacy or windbreak. It can be planted solitary or in hedges, provided the planting meets the requirements. In the right location, the plant will provide joy for a long time.
How do I plant a tree of life correctly?
To properly plant a tree of life, choose a frost-free day in autumn or winter, water the root ball, dig a planting hole twice as wide, place the plant in it, fill with fertilized soil, press lightly and then water good. Make sure there is sufficient planting distance.
Time
Planting in autumn or winter when the thuja is dormant is ideal. Choose a frost-free and overcast day so that the hedge plant does not suffer any damage. Watering is not necessary at this time. The tree begins to develop roots just in time for the beginning of spring. The container goods offered in stores enable year-round planting. Between spring and autumn, the tree of life uses a lot of water and relies on additional irrigation.
Preparations
To give the hedge plant an optimal start to the growth phase, water the root ball well before planting. Place it in a tub filled with water for at least two hours so that the substrate soaks up. As soon as no more bubbles appear, the plant is ready to plant.
Distance
We recommend putting up a plant line for a tree of life hedge. Dig holes along this line and ensure there is sufficient spacing. Thuja varieties grow in different heights and widths. Arborvitae, which reach a maximum height of one meter, require a distance of 40 to 60 centimeters all around. For taller trees, you should ensure a space of 90 centimeters.
Planting instructions
Remove the sod at the later locations. The planting hole is twice the width of the root ball and is just as deep. Store the excavated material next to the pits so that you can use the earth for filling later. Loosen the bottom of the pit to a depth of ten centimeters. With this measure you promote root penetration of the soil.
Planting thuja:
- Place the root ball in the hole and fill the gaps with fertilized soil
- Press the substrate on baled goods lightly with your foot
- shake bare-root thuja vigorously so that cavities close
- Form a watering edge around the base of the trunk and water well
Tip
After planting bales, cut the cloth open and strip it down two thirds. The material rots over time.
