Pointed cabbage, like the related white cabbage varieties, is part of the head cabbage. It is easy to cultivate in the garden, is robust and suitable for early cultivation. This means that the cabbage variety provides delicious and he althy vegetables from May onwards.
When and how to harvest pointed cabbage?
Pointed cabbage is best harvested from May when the heads are firm and show strong growth. Cut the stalk with a disinfected, sharp knife and store the cabbage in a cool, dark place, e.g. in a hanging net in the cellar.
Care for high yields
Successfully grown young plants should be given the opportunity to grow without competition from unwanted weeds. Check the bed regularly for weeds and weed it if necessary. The cabbage variety does not like drought. Weekly watering is part of the basic program during the growth phase. During long dry periods, the vegetables should be watered more often. Later in the season it is worth piling up the plants. This improves the stability of the heads. Remove wilted outer leaves to prevent rot.
When the harvest begins
Pointed cabbage is characterized by rapid growth. You can pick off young leaves at any time after they appear. If you want to harvest whole heads, the harvest time depends on the sowing date. After successful germination in January, the pointed cabbages are ready to harvest in May. The later you sow the seeds, the stronger the plants will develop. Then the harvest is postponed until August or September.
How to harvest correctly:
- disinfect sharp knife
- Push away the soil around the stem and cut it
- Loose pointed cabbage and store in wicker baskets
Pull the remaining stem and roots out of the substrate and compost the remains. No cabbage should be grown on the bed for the next four years. In this way you prevent the soil from being one-sidedly stressed and the vegetables from being attacked by diseases.
Proper storage
Unbroken heads will keep for about a week if stored in a cool place. Hanging nets are ideal for storage and can be hung up in a dark and dry basement. The harvest can be stored whole or chopped in the vegetable compartment. You can freeze pointed cabbage by first washing the cabbage thoroughly and blanching the leaves for about three minutes. Then store the vegetables in freezer bags.
Tip
Do not place the heads next to apples as the cabbage will wilt more quickly.
