Since soil residues and germs can stick to densely grown cabbages, the vegetables should be washed thoroughly before processing. We will explain how you should proceed in the following article.
How do you wash white cabbage correctly?
To wash cabbage, remove outer leaves and quarter the head. Cut out the stem, fan out the leaves and rinse them thoroughly. For shredded white cabbage, place the vegetables in a sieve after slicing and rinse with lukewarm water.
Preparing the white cabbage
In order for the cabbage to be washed, it must first be prepared:
- Remove the outer, unsightly leaves.
- Quart the head with a large knife.
- Now cut out the stem at a slight angle.
- Depending on how you want to process the white cabbage, divide it again and cut it into fine strips or slice it.
Rinse white cabbage carefully
Opinions differ as to whether the very densely grown cabbages need to be washed. Since insects and grains of sand could also hide between the leaves, it is recommended to rinse the white cabbage at least briefly:
- Cut out the stem and quarter the white cabbage.
- Fan the cabbage and wash all leaves thoroughly.
If you would like to process the white cabbage planed, you can proceed as follows:
- Cut out the stalk and quarter the cabbage head.
- Plane into strips.
- Put the vegetables in a coarse-mesh sieve and rinse carefully with lukewarm water.
- Place on a kitchen towel and pat dry. You can spin dry smaller quantities with the salad spinner.
How do you recognize fresh cabbage?
- If you buy white cabbage directly from the producer, the head usually still has its dark green leaves. These must not be wilted and should have an intense color.
- If the white cabbage is very light, it can be assumed that the outer leaves have been repeatedly removed. These heads are probably cabbage that has been stored for a long time and is no longer quite as fresh.
- The head of cabbage should be free of black spots. These indicate mold infestation, which can also be found inside.
- Examine the outer leaves for feeding marks, burrows and tiny droppings. These come from lodgers who made themselves comfortable in the Weißkraut.
Tip
If you are pregnant, you should definitely wash the white cabbage very thoroughly with lukewarm water. This is the only way you can be sure that there are no more dangerous toxoplasmas or listeria on the vegetables.
