How and when should you repot an angel trumpet?
Repotting an angel's trumpet is ideally done in spring. Choose a container that is about three finger widths larger than the root ball. Create drainage made of expanded clay and use a mixture of potted plant soil, lava granules and coconut humus as a substrate. Make sure there is a 5 cm high pouring rim.
When is the best time?
You should repot an angel trumpet for the first time on the day you buy it. Young Brugmansia are usually sold in pots that are much too small. Furthermore, the young plants often grow in substrate of inferior quality.
From now on, repot your angel trumpet every spring. The South American nightshade plant does not tolerate frost. The best time to move to a larger container with fresh substrate is immediately after clearing out the frost-free winter quarters.
How do you properly repot an angel trumpet?
Repotting an angel's trumpet correctly has a decisive influence on the summer flowers and he althy growth. These criteria get to the heart of how you do it right:
- With the right pot size, three fingers' width fits between the root ball and the container wall.
- There are several drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket.
- A 5 cm high drainage made of expanded clay prevents waterlogging.
- The worn-out soil is shaken or rinsed off the potted root ball.
- A mixture of high-quality pot plant soil, lava granules and coconut humus is suitable as a substrate.
- The ideal planting depth takes into account a 5 cm high watering edge.
What should you do if a bucket becomes too heavy?
Use the pot planter trick to keep the increasing weight of an angel trumpet in the pot under control. To do this, plant the Brugmansia in a plastic pot. Drill 5 cm holes in the floor and walls. Place the perforated plant pot in a larger planter on a 5 cm layer of expanded clay. Fill the remaining cavities with substrate.
Thanks to the drilled holes, additional root space is available for the angel's trumpet in summer. Before putting it away, lift the plastic pot out of the planter. Cut off any roots protruding from the openings with a sharp knife. Place a foil bag over the plant pot and transport the plant to its winter quarters.
Can you plant an angel trumpet?
As an alternative to the pot-planter method, you can plant an angel's trumpet in the bed. The best time is the end of May. In a sunny to partially shaded location, sink the perforated plant pot into the ground. Please mix half of the excavated pit with compost before burying the bucket in it.
In the fall, pull the bucket out of the ground, cut off any extra-long roots and put the angel's trumpet away.

In summer the angel's trumpet becomes a swallowing woodpecker. In order to cover the high water requirements, it is best to water the thirsty potted plant thoroughly in the morning and evening. If the leaves curl during the day, your Brugmansia wants to be watered immediately. Let the low-lime water run directly onto the root disc until the saucer fills up.
