Can the decorative basket be used as a medicinal plant?
The Cosmea with its delicate basket flowers in different colors and fine, feathery leaves is primarily used as a pretty ornamental plant. However, nothing is known about the possible healing effects of the popular summer flower, which is why it is not used as a medicinal plant.
Is the jewelry basket poisonous?
The Cosmea is very popular with insects and is particularly popular with wild bees. But the summer flower is by no means poisonous for people and other animals. Instead, all parts of the plant – especially the flowers – are even edible.
What can you make from the flowers of cosmea?
The flowers of the Cosmea are suitable for many purposes. For example, you can
- use as decoration for salads and desserts
- in flower butter
- in flower sugar or s alt
- for homemade ice cream
- for pretty ice cubes
- for homemade flower oils
Flower butter, for example, is an eye-catcher on any festive table or for a summer brunch.
How do you make blossom butter or blossom sugar?
For flower butter, knead soft butter with a little finely grated orange peel (alternatively orange flavor for baking) and s alt with colorfully mixed flowers. These can be used dried or fresh, depending on your preference. In addition to Cosmea, you can also use or mix the flowers of dandelions, daisies, elderberries, lavender or nasturtiums.
For colorful flower sugar, simply crush sugar and colorful cosmea flowers in a mortar (or chop both in a blender) and fill the mixture into well-sealed containers. The sugar takes on the color of the flowers and, if stored in a cool and dry place, will last for approx. 9 months.
Tip
How to dry Cosmea properly
So that you can use the colorful Cosmea flowers beyond the flowering period, you should let them air dry in a warm, dark place. This means they retain their strong colors and can be stored well closed and dry for a long time.
