In order for apple trees to produce consistently high yields, they must be cut regularly. However, there is a second method to increase yield: bring some branches of the fruit tree horizontal. You can find out how this technique, known in technical jargon as forming, works here.
How to tie down the branches of the apple tree?
You can tie the branches to a trellis,weigh them down with weightsor attach them to a post structure placed around the tree. It is also important that the shoots are still young and flexible so that they do not break.
Why should the branches of the apple tree be tied down?
The horizontal young shootsform more and faster flower buds and bear a lot of fruit the following year. Tying down the branches is therefore at least as important as correct pruning to increase the yield of the apple tree.
When are the branches of the apple tree formed?
You should tie down the branches of the apple treein June or July. At this point they are not yet woody and can be easily bent without breaking. After a few months, the fixation is removed and remains at the optimal 45 degree angle as the wood hardens.
How are the branches fixed?
Of course it's particularly easytying to the taut wires of a trellis.
Alternatively, you can proceed as follows:
- Fill old stockings with stones and hang these weights on the relevant branch.
- Pour concrete into old flower pots and, before it hardens, insert a wire (€120.00 on Amazon), which is used for hanging on the shoots, into them.
- Drive a few stakes into the ground around the tree and attach a spreader piece of wood to them. The branches can be tied very well to this construction.
Tip
Do not prune until March
The apple tree should under no circumstances be cut back in autumn and winter. During this time, the fruit tree is not able to close the wounds promptly. This could allow parasites and germs to penetrate the tree and cause massive damage. The right time for winter pruning is March or April, when severe frosts are no longer expected.
