The dahlia - whose cultivated forms are now available in an unmanageable variety - originally comes from warm Mexico. That's why the plant with the impressive flowers is not hardy in our area, which is also reflected in the recommended planting time.

The best time to plant dahlias is betweenmid-April and May, provided it is warm enough and there are no frosts. In principle, you can plant the tubers in the ground in June, then they will bloom later.

For dahlias, the recommended planting time is usually betweenmid-April and May, although you should treat this information with caution: only when the temperaturesare stable above 18 °C, you should put the tubers in the ground. This is usually the caseafter the Ice Saints, around mid-May. In addition, at this time there is no longer any risk of night frosts that could damage the tubers. Dahlias do not tolerate frost and should therefore be protected from cold.
When is the latest when you can plant dahlia tubers?
Even inJune there is still time to put the dahlia tubers in the ground. In this case, there is no longer any danger of the sensitive dahlias freezing - although they will start flowering later.
Can you also grow dahlias and then plant them?
If you live in a cooler region and therefore cannot adhere to the recommended planting time for dahlias - or even if you want to enjoy the lush blooms earlier in the year - then the tubers can also be planted on the windowsill. This is possiblefrom February, whereby the sprouted plants are only allowed outside after the Ice Saints - i.e. from mid-May at the earliest - and after a certain period of getting used to the changed climate.
