In this country, only the Japanese fiber banana, Musa basjoo, and the rarer Darjeeling banana, Musa sikkimensis, are considered “hardy”. However, both are still quite sensitive and need good winter protection. But when is the right time to unpack the bananas again after winter?
When should you remove winter protection from bananas?
Basically, you should remove the winter protection from the bananaas quickly as possible, as the risk of rot increases with the rising temperatures in spring. But be careful:late frostscan still causesignificant damage to the banana!
Can you unpack the banana in March?
It's best to removethe winter protection from the banana in March / April- that's the theory. But even if there are warm days this early in the year, winter can still come late - and your unprotected banana plant will freeze. To avoid this, it's best to proceedstep by step:
- Do not remove all winter packaging straight away.
- First, only remove the cover to ventilate during the day.
- This reduces the risk of heat build-up and thus rot.
- The cover comes back on at night.
The complete winter protection should only be removed after the Ice SaintsMid to end of May.
When does the banana sprout after unpacking?
If you gradually remove the winter protection from the banana starting in April, it shouldapprox. Re-sprout mid to late May. Depending on the weather and temperature, this may take a little longer. But even if the banana doesn't stir untilin June: These plants grow extremely quickly and gain an average of one centimeter per day - plus one new leaf per week.
When can potted bananas go outside?
The same rules apply to potted bananas as to removing winter protection from planted bananas: Place the plantsas early as March- provided the sun is shining and temperatures are above 12 °C before -hourly to get used to itoutdoors. However, you should bring them back in overnight. Also be careful not to put the bananas in full sun right away: then you will quickly get sunburned. When is the best time to separate the children?
The best time to separate the kindles - i.e. the offshoots that banana plants constantly produce - is late spring or early summer. Then the young plants have enough time to take root and grow before winter. But be careful: Hardy banana varieties should only be planted when they are a little older and more robust.
