What should I consider when repotting my hydrangeas in the pot?
Approximately every two years the time has come: the hydrangea has grown and needs a larger pot.2 – 3 centimeters more diameter is sufficient. If you proceed carefully when repotting and use the right substrate, your hydrangea will accept the new pot quickly and without damage.
When is the right time to repot the hydrangea?
Hydrangeas should be repotted approximatelyevery two to four years in the spring. If you overwinter your hydrangeas indoors, repotting can be combined with moving them back outdoors. If you notice that the hydrangea stops growing or produces fewer flowers, you can also consider repotting it earlier.
How do I properly repot my hydrangea?
- The new pot should have a2 - 3 centimeters larger diameter than the old one.
- Lay adrainage layer made of clay, gravel or similar on the bottom of the pot.
- Put a layer ofsoil on top of the drainage.
- Take the hydrangea out of its old pot and check theroot ball for any rot. Cut off rotten roots.
- Place the hydrangea in the new pot and fill with soil all around. Press the soil firmly.
- Place the hydrangea in its new location in partial shade andwater the hydrangea vigorously.
Which soil is best for hydrangeas in a pot?
Hydrangeas have the following requirements on themSubstrate:
- loose and permeable
- nutrient-rich
- slightly sour
- can store a lot of water
Special hydrangea soil is best suited as soil for hydrangeas in pots. Alternatively, rhododendron soil can also be used.

Replant newly purchased hydrangeas immediately
The pots of newly purchased hydrangeas are in most cases too small. You should therefore transplant the plants into a larger pot immediately after purchase.
