Fragrant lilacs not only thrive in the garden, the ornamental shrub can also be cultivated well in pots on the balcony or terrace. Then the otherwise completely winter-hardy ornamental shrub needs a little more care in order to get through the cold season well.
Can I overwinter lilacs in pots outside?
Lilac cultivated in a pot can overwinter outdoors and does not need to be brought indoors. Since the roots are only protected from frost by the pot and the substrate, some measures must be taken to ensure that the ornamental shrub does not freeze.
How do I protect lilacs from freezing?
So that the roots of the lilac are not damaged in the cold, cover the pot with a warming layer:
- So that the earth does not freeze completely in winter, the bucket should be wrapped with garden fleece, bubble wrap, raffia or coconut mats.
- To prevent the water drainage hole from freezing, place the bucket on a base made of Styrofoam, wood or a special ceramic base. This also prevents the pot from bursting in the cold.
- In addition, the lilac can be placed on the protective house wall.
Tip
The lilac in the pot needs water even in winter
In the cold season, the pot ball of the lilac must not dry out completely. Therefore, water the ornamental shrub on frost-free days.
