Around 3,000 species of palm trees thrive in different regions of the world. Accordingly, there is no substrate that covers the needs of all palm plants equally.
Which soil is best for palm trees?
The right soil for palm trees should be loose, allow plenty of air to reach the roots and store water well without causing waterlogging. A mixture of fine quartz sand, quartz grit and expanded clay beads can loosen up conventional potting soil. Depending on the type of palm tree, coconut substrate, bark humus and calcareous clay can also be used.
Match individual requirements to the species
However, all palm trees have one thing in common: they prefer loose soil that allows plenty of air to reach the roots and stores water well. At the same time, waterlogging must be avoided at all costs.
Conventional potting soil does not meet these special conditions and usually needs to be enriched with additives. The following are suitable for loosening up:
- fine quartz sand
- Quartz chippings
- Expanded clay beads.
Use topsoil (€14.00 on Amazon) as a basis, we recommend mixing in horn shavings or guano as a starting aid.

Tip
