Proper care for rhubarb is all about a few factors. The following lines get to the heart of what these are and how they are implemented.
How do I care for rhubarb properly?
When caring for rhubarb, it is important to water regularly, especially if the soil is dry, to give the plants heavy-feeding fertilizer and to implement it in autumn. Winter pruning is not necessary; instead, plants grow naturally. Watch out for diseases such as rhubarb mosaic and take preventative measures.
How to water rhubarb?
Mature rhubarb plants develop a huge mass of leaves. In addition, they evaporate large amounts of water in a sunny location. The demand for irrigation water is at a correspondingly high level.
- Water the rhubarb generously if the soil is dry
- give the water directly to the roots
- water preferably in the morning or evening
Which fertilizer is recommended?
As a heavy eater, rhubarb requires a constant supply of nutrients. From February to June, regularly work a well-measured dose of garden compost into the soil. A mulch layer of grass, leaves or pine needles preserves moisture in the soil and releases valuable nutrients.
Following the harvest, the focus of fertilization shifts to the addition of nitrogen. Add horn shavings (€12.00 on Amazon) or horn meal to the compost. A spray with nettle manure or liquid guano is also recommended.
When should rhubarb be planted?
He althy rhubarb stays in its location for seven years. After this long cultivation period, move the plant so that the soil can recover. Experienced amateur gardeners are now dividing the rootstock to rejuvenate and propagate rhubarb.
- Dig up rhubarb widely in autumn
- divide into two or more segments with the spade
- let the interface dry
Does rhubarb need to be cut for overwintering?
From June onwards, rhubarb can grow as it pleases. In this way he builds up strength reserves for the coming season. Before winter sets in, the plant pulls in its remaining stems and leaves on its own. No cutting is necessary.
Winter protection is only recommended in rough locations and in the first year:
- spin the stalks out of the plant
- cover the plant with compost, straw, leaves or brushwood
- Wrap the pot with bubble wrap and place it on wood
Are certain diseases at risk?
Rhubarb mosaic disease is considered the most important disease. The symptoms appear in the form of mosaic-like green, yellowish or brown necrosis. Direct combat is not yet possible. The meticulous use of virus-free planting material, the constant elimination of aphids and spraying with liverwort extract have a preventative effect.
Tips & Tricks
Regular weeding is an indispensable part of care. Shortly before the harvest, knowledgeable gardeners no longer rake the rhubarb. The result is a significantly lower nitrate level in the plants.
