You haven't yet had the confidence to plant eggplants yourself? Sowing seeds is not nearly as difficult as you think. A greenhouse for cultivation is an advantage, but you can also grow the heat-loving fruits on the windowsill.
How do I sow eggplants?
To sow eggplants, fill a growing container with substrate, sow the seed thinly and cover it with a thin layer of substrate. The germination temperature should be constant at 25 degrees. Cover the container with foil and place it in a bright place, but not directly above the heater.
Aubergines need consistent temperatures
The fruits come from the Mediterranean area. The germination temperatures must therefore be high. Eggplants do not tolerate temperature changes during germination.
Moving forward on the windowsill
Fill a growing tray (€35.00 on Amazon) or a mini greenhouse with growing substrate. The soil is well moistened and the seeds are sown thinly. It is then covered with a thin layer of substrate.
Place a cover over the growing container or use transparent foil. The foil keeps the temperature constant and prevents it from drying out.
Place the cultivation containers in a bright place with a temperature of 25 degrees. Do not place it directly above the heater, but rather next to it.
Tips in brief:
- Growing container with substrate
- 25 degrees germination temperature
- Foil cover
After germination, keep it a little cooler
The film is ventilated every other day. After the seeds have emerged, the cover is completely removed.
Transplanting into pots
As soon as the plants have grown 15 centimeters, they are placed in slightly larger individual pots. The eggplants are planted outdoors from the end of May.
Growing in the greenhouse
A foil cover is not necessary in the greenhouse. Regular spraying of the seed trays ensures sufficient moisture.
Tips & Tricks
If you don't have a mini greenhouse, the eggplants can also be grown in small pots. The finished pots are simply placed in freezer bags to maintain the temperature. This saves the hassle of pricking out the eggplants and makes planting them outdoors easier.
