One of the most common problems when growing young plants is mold formation on the soil. The growing soil or pots are often responsible for this.
Why is my potting soil moldy and how can I prevent it?
Growing soil often becomes moldy due to germs and spores that enter through improper storage, inferior products or a lack of ventilation. To prevent mold growth, use high-quality potting soil, store it dry and closed, and ventilate the plants at least once a day.
Causes of mold formation
Cause | Remedy |

Sowing soil was available in the open air. There are often one or more small holes in the bags through which germs and spores can enter. | Only buy seed that has been stored indoors. |
Soil has already been opened and has been stored in the garage or garden shed for a long time. | Use sowing soil quickly after opening. |
No name products are also often charged. | Go for high-quality products (€6.00 on Amazon). |
The cover wasn't taken off for days. | The small plants should be aired at least once, preferably twice a day. |
Tip
You can sterilize growing soil in the oven. All you need to do is heat the substrate in the oven at 140 degrees for half an hour. In the microwave, select the highest wattage and leave the earth in the device for about 10 minutes.
